1.5TB for under $100?

If you are building your own PC these are a fine choice for your "cheap and deep" storage area. Buy them in pairs, mirror them (RAID 1), and forget about them.

Spend your cash on your Solid State Drive for boot and swap. Put your high-IO areas on a set of more expensive, faster drives.

But for archives? It's hard to beat a 1.5TB RAID 1 set for $190.

I was running of space on my Windows Home Server and after some reviewing I bought this hard drive.So far in my server I have used 4 500GB and two 1TB Western Digital green drives.Never had a problem with any of them. The 500's model numbers end with AADS and the 1TB's EADS. since these worked for me I decided to stay in this product line. After realising that the 2TB EADS drives cost about $40 more than this model I decided to try this one. I did my research first and after reading many reviews I used wdidle3 to disable the head parking timer before I installed the drive into my server (I also ran it on the other drives).
After this the drive installed without any problem and is working very well.

P.S. If you need to run wdidle3 to upgrade your firmware you must boot the cd from an IDE cd drive. I tried running it on my pc but all the drives connected are sata so the bootable cd would not load. Luckily my server has an IDE drive so I ran it on that and updated all of my drives(I had to reboot and connect one drive at a time to update them).

I've done some video editing with the month-old rebuilt system this drive is in, so it has had some intensive use with no problems. To my unsophisticated awareness of such things hard drives of every brand all work about the same until they don't work at all, which happens at least a year down the road if it does happen. I've had WD drives croak this way, without warning, but I've had Seagates and Maxtors go too. The WD5001 worked out of the box (well, the OEM wrapper), set up Windows 7 without a hiccup, and is a nice chunk of storage for a nice price. Five stars.

Easy install. Works great. Very fast. Using with Ubuntu 10.04(64-bit). I had no problems loading everything onto it, and it runs really well. Also, this drive is super-quiet! This machine is both my everyday computer and is part of my home theater. I can watch movies on it and not even hear the drive. Average read rate showing as 105.1Mb/s in Disk Utility benchmark test.

It took about five minutes tops to pull out the old hard drive and put the new one in and it was my first time replacing a hard drive. Of course, it took a lot longer to put windows and all my programs back on but that's a given. The drive is quieter than the factory one and it seems quick although I haven't done any speed tests or anything like that.

What everyone wants in a hard drive. A big 1 TB drive, a fast 7200 RPM's, and less than $69. You can't beat this.

I got this unit as a package deal with my Toshiba E205 Satellite Laptop. The Netgear Push2TV box has to get a firmware update before use. I didn't read the little slip of paper that comes in the box with the Netgear unit and tried to make it work, it won't! It looks like the picture is out of sync. I was ready to take it back, but thought I would at least look at the papers that came with it. That's when I found the little slip of paper that states you have to upgrade the firmware BEFORE USE! How sad is that? Not that it is a hard thing to do, just the fact that the end user has too. That said, downloading the newer firmware was easy along with installation. Once completed this unit works great for me. I've tested it up to 25 feet away with no issues.

My primary use is photo and video sharing with senior family members. It puts it on a screen big enough that they can see easly and the fact that "It's on TV", seems to excite them. Fact of the matter, young and old like seeing their selfs on the TV. With this unit it makes it very easy and it is great to do it without wires!!

All in all;

I think is is poor planning that firmware has to be installed before it works, right out of the box.
Once updated it works great.
I like that it comes with the HDMI cable.
Very easy to use. One button on my Toshiba has it up and running.

Good hard drive, plenty of space, fairly quite. Good performance with the 64MB cache (most drives this size use 32MB). I bought this drive for a new build that had a SATA3 motherboard. After doing some quick benchmarks, this drive doesn't use up much more bandwidth than the SATA2 interface provides (typically falls short but a descent margin). So I am not sure when they deicded to give this drive a SATA3 interface, other for marketing reason of course.

Still a good drive, but if you can find a bigger or a cheaper SATA2 drive, go for it.

This product could be awesome too? but I did not have a chance to use it and this is the reason: I have ordered 3 of this product and 3 covers and install it myself
and I just installed one and it did not work so I return them. I know if I bought them already installed, I will love them as well the 500GB I just bought and use to entertain me and all the friends every day (Karaoke).

Great price and it worked like a charm, just plugged it in, turn computer on and presto. Stay away from those guys from Komputerbay, I bought it from them it didn't work, then they were very slow to respond and had to use to get my money back (minus return shipping).
